A referendum on the construction of a nuclear power station in Kazakhstan will be held on 6 October 2024, Kazakh president Kassym-Jomart Tokayev said during his annual state-of-the-nation address on 2 September, according to the official Akorda press service.

“I spoke about holding a referendum last year. This topic has been on the public agenda for a year now,” Tokayev said.

“This is a sufficient period for citizens to make a balanced decision. In this regard, I support the government’s proposal [for a referendum].

The national referendum on the construction of the nuclear power plant will take place on October 6 of this year, and today, I will sign the corresponding decree,” Tokayev said.
