Poland and Japan are hoping to cooperate on nuclear energy including a high temperature gas-cooled reactor (HTGR) project.

Poland’s minister of climate and environment Anna Moskwa met Japan’s ambassador to Poland Akio Miyajima and said afterwards that the talks included plans for accelerating work on a Japanese HTGR research project.

The Japan Atomic Energy Agency began research and development of HTGRs in 1969. The high-temperature test reactor (HTTR) to the north of Tokyo in Oarai, Ibaraki Prefecture, is a small prototype HTGR. The plant achieved first criticality in November 1998.
