The Patnow coal site in central Poland meets “all geological and environmental conditions” to host up to four South Korea-made APR-1400 pressurised water reactor units, state-run Korea Hydro and Nuclear Power Company (KHNP) told Poland’s BiznesAlert portal.

KHNP said a nearby water reservoir has enough capacity to satisfy the cooling needs of such a nuclear power station.

In November KHNP said it had begun investigating the Patnow site for the construction of APR-1400 plants.

In October, Polish energy companies ZE PAK and PGE signed a letter of intent with KHNP for the proposed construction of a nuclear power station at Patnow – a project which will be developed by “private business” and not run by the government under its 2020 nuclear energy programme.
