Poland’s state-controlled energy giant Orlen could build a first small modular reactor (SMR) nuclear plant near the central Polish city of Wloclawek, but the decision is subject to negotiations with private partner Synthos Green Energy, Orlen’s chief executive told journalists.

Ireneusz Fafara told a press briefing that Orlen aims to reach an agreement on the future of the Orlen Synthos Green Energy (OSGE) joint venture with Synthos by the end of September.

OSGE was established in 2022 as a joint venture between Orlen and Synthos Green Energy. GE Hitachi and Synthos announced in October 2019 an agreement to collaborate on the potential deployment of GE Hitachi’s BWRX-300 SMRs in Poland.
