US advanced nuclear reactor designer NuScale has secured an additional $30m in private investment, giving it enough committed cash to meet the minimum needed to close a merger deal that could take it public.

The merger is being handled through a Spac, or special purpose acquisition company. This type of merger typically requires minimum cash proceeds to the company that will assume the public listing. Those proceeds can be a combination of private investment (known as Pipe, for private investment in public equity) and money invested in the publicly traded Spac.

In the NuScale deal, the additional $30m comes from Samsung C&T Corp. The funding had been contingent upon completion of a commercial arrangement among Samsung C&T, NuScale and NuScale majority owner Fluor. It brings Samsung C&T’s Pipe commitment to $50m.
