Global nuclear generation will be 2,959 TWh in 2026, the highest level since International Energy Agency records began in 1972, the Paris-based agency has predicted.
China and Russia are the technology providers for 70% of the reactors currently under construction, according to the Paris-based agency’s Electricity 2024 report from 24 January.
“The rapid growth of renewables and a steady expansion of nuclear power are together on course to match all the increase in global electricity demand over the next three years,” said IEA executive director Fatih Birol, in a statement accompanying the report.
Global electricity demand increased by 2.2% in 2023, and is expected to reach about 3.4% from 2024 to 2026, according to the IEA data.
