Spain has announced a €3bn raid on energy companies’ profits with country’s nuclear industry saying operations could halt if the plans go ahead.

Measures were agreed by prime minister Pedro Sánchez and his cabinet include the creation of a new tax on energy firms’ windfall gains which will last until the end of March and is expected to generate €2.6bn, the ministry for ecological transition said in a statement.

This money will then be poured back to consumers over the next six months to help reduce monthly electricity bills, the statement added.
