The US Nuclear Regulatory Commission has approved a license amendment filed earlier by Centrus Energy to produce high-assay, low-enriched uranium (Haleu) at an Ohio facility, a statement by the company said.

Maryland-based Centrus said its facility in Piketon, Ohio, is now the only such on US soil licensed to enrich uranium up to 20% Uranium-235 (U-235) and expects to begin demonstrating Haleu production early next year.

According to the company, Haleu fuels will be required for most of the advanced reactor designs under development and may also be used in next generation fuel designs for existing reactors in the US and around the world.
