The US Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) has granted a 20-year licence renewal for the two commercial reactor units at the Comanche Peak nuclear power station in Texas, allowing operations to continue until 2053.

The two units, owned and operated by US utility Vistra, are of the pressurised water reactor type and their initial operating licences were set to expire in 2030 and 2033. The units began commercial operation in 1990 and 1993.

The NRC decision means the 1,205-MW Comanche Peak-1 will be able operate until 2050 and the 1,195-MW Comanche Peak-2 until 2053.
