The US Nuclear Regulatory Commission has agreed to review an early site permit (ESP) renewal application submitted by Entergy in September for its Grand Gulf site in Mississippi.
The initial ESP for the site had been issued in 2007, following a 2003 application submittal. The site is currently home to a single 1,401-MW boiling water reactor unit that began commercial operation in 1985.
The NRC said in a statement that the 2007 ESP resolved many site-related safety and environmental issues, and concluded the site is suitable for possible future construction and operation of a nuclear power plant.
