European advanced reactor manufacturer Newcleo has signed a partnership deal with US fusion energy company Shine to explore collaboration over fuel supply on both sides of the Atlantic.
In a statement, Newcleo said Wisconsin-based Shine, which is expanding into nuclear fuel recycling, would assess how it could supply it with mixed-oxide (Mox) fuel for its reactors, and also how it could recycle spent fuel from its reactors.
Newcleo’s 200 MW commercial reactor design will use Mox fuel reprocessed from nuclear waste, which is seen as a sustainable and low-carbon alternative to standard low-enriched uranium fuel.
