Small modular reactor developer Newcleo has said that it wants to build up to 20 plutonium-fuelled SMRs at six sites in the UK.
This development came just before UK prime minister Rishi Sunak’s Conservative manifesto was released with the promise to build two fleets of SMRs within 100 days of taking office.
Newcleo has started looking at UK sites close to industrial centres, including Teesside, Humberside and Merseyside, according to a report in the Daily Telegraph newspaper on 9 June.
An industry analyst told NucNet that, “as far as I understand, Newcleo is saying in the article that the 20 planned UK units will be fuelled by plutonium”.
