European nuclear technology company Newcleo intends to build a €1.8bn ($2bn) facility to manufacture recycled nuclear fuel in the Aube department of northeastern France, with operations expected to begin by 2030.
A statement by the Nogent-sur-Seine commune said the planned facility will support Newcleo’s development of Generation IV lead-cooled fast reactors and contribute to France’s broader strategy to revive its nuclear industry, reduce carbon emissions and strengthen energy independence.
The statement said the site, in the municipalities of Pont-sur-Seine and Marnay-sur-Seine, will manufacture mixed oxide (MOX) fuel using materials from reprocessed or unused nuclear fuel.
