An AP1000 pressurised water reactor unit planned for Bulgaria’s existing Kozloduy site in the north of the country could be operational in 2032, according to Ivan Pironkov, country manager for US-based plant supplier Westinghouse.
Pironkov was quoted by the local BTA news agency as saying that 2032 is a “realistic deadline” for the deployment of what would be a seventh unit at the site on the Danube River, which has two VVER-1000 reactor units in commercial operation and four VVER-440 units in permanent shutdown.
He told a conference that Bulgaria could be the first country in Europe to commission an AP1000 plant.
