The construction of new nuclear plants in Switzerland would increase energy independence over the long-term and help the country on a path towards net zero emissions, a study from the Foundation for Technology Assessment (TA-Swiss) shows.
The study, published by the Swiss Nuclear Forum, indicated that the construction of new nuclear should work alongside a buildout in other renewable energy sources such as solar and wind, and the effects would be not be seen until the 2050s and beyond.
However, the study showed that without new nuclear plants net energy imports would rise in the winter to around 10.5 terawatt hours (TWh) through to 2070.
