Additional Swedish nuclear capacity could lower electricity prices by 6% in the long run and save electricity consumers approximately €13bn ($13.9bn) between 2035 and 2055, analysis by Aurora Energy Research has shown.

The Stockholm-based research company said Sweden’s push towards a fossil-free economy by 2045 had gained momentum with nuclear utility Vattenfall’s potential selection of Rolls-Royce and GE Hitachi for small modular reactors at its Ringhals site.

It said additional nuclear capacity in the SE3 electricity price area is projected to “notably lower baseload prices”. SE3 covers the Stockholm metropolitan area and surrounding regions including Stockholm, Uppsala and Gotland.
