Agency head plans to highlight role nuclear can play in global transition to clean energy
The International Atomic Energy Agency’s new director-general Rafael Mariano Grossi is making his first official trip since taking office, attending the UN’s COP25 climate conference in Madrid where he will call for “a level financial playing field” for all forms of low-carbon generation including nuclear. In a statement on Tuesday the IAEA said COP25 will lay the groundwork for next year’s defining climate change conference in Glasgow, where countries must submit new climate action plans under the Paris Agreement. The central aim of the agreement is to strengthen the global response to the threat of climate change by keeping a global temperature rise this century well below 2C above pre-industrial levels and to pursue efforts to limit the temperature increase even further to 1.5C.
