The Mihama-3 nuclear power plant in Japan has been  shut down for scheduled maintenance by Kansai Electric Power Company, including upgrades required to meet stricter anti-terrorism rules adopted after the 2011 Fukushima disaster.

The utility shut the 780-MW on Saturday, before the 25 October deadline for tighter anti-terrorism security upgrades at the facility.

The move was expected because the company warned in May that it would not be able to implement tighter anti-terrorism standards before the deadline, meaning the reactor would be taken offline before then.
