Installation of nuclear island equipment has begun for Unit 3 of the Zhangzhou nuclear power station under construction in Fujian province, eastern China.

The China Nuclear Energy Association (CNEA) said the phase will include the installation of main equipment such as the reactor pressure vessel, steam generators, and main pumps, piping, and instrumentation and control systems.

Construction of Zhangzhou-3, a 1,126-MW domestic Hualong One, or HPR1000, pressurised water reactor, began in February 2024.

The Zhangzhou nuclear station will have six Hualong One reactor units in total.

Zhangzhou-1 became the first and only to start commercial operation in January 2025.

Zhangzhou-2 completed hot functional testing earlier this month, while construction of Zhangzhou-4 began in September 2024.

According to the CNEA, China has begun preparatory works for Zhangzhou-5 and -6 which proceed in “orderly manner.”

International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) data shows that there are 18 Hualong One units either under construction or in operation in China.
