Lithuania’s nuclear regulator has issued a permit for the start of industrial operation of a European-funded repository for very low-level radioactive waste at the Ignalina nuclear power plant site.

According to state company Ignalina NPP (INPP), which operates the Ignalina nuclear plant, the permit, issued by the State Nuclear Power Safety Inspectorate (Vatesi), allows the transition to permanent operation following the successful completion of both “cold” and “hot” commissioning phases.

The repository has been built to hold waste from Ignalina’s decommissioning, which is expected to be completed by 2038.
