Canada-based L3Harris Technologies has won a contract from Romania’s state-owned utility Societatea Nationala Nuclearelectrica to upgrade the Cernavodă nuclear power station’s operator training simulator. The Montreal company will modernise the existing simulator’s aging hardware and improve its software performance and maintainability. The upgraded Candu operator training simulator is expected to be in service in the third quarter of 2021.Cernavodă director Dan Bigu said Nuclearelectrica is preparing to upgrade Unit 1 at the Cernavodă station, which has two Candu-6 units in commercial operation, providing just over 17% of the country’s electricity generation. Cernavoda-1 was the first Candu plant in Europe and is expected to operate for another 30 years.
