Work to complete two new units at the Khmelnitski nuclear power station in Ukraine has not yet begun and will depend on integration of the country’s energy system with the European network, state nuclear operator Energoatom told NucNet.

The company, which operates Ukraine’s fleet of 15 commercial nuclear power plants, said the country’s connection to the European Network of Transmission System Operators (Entso-E) network will enable it to export electricity from the existing Khmelnitski-2 unit to European countries.

A long-term contract for the export of this electricity will be “a key financing tool” for the planned completion of Khmelnitski-3 and Khmelnitski-4, Energoatom said in an email.
