International Nuclear Societies Council Announces 2020 Winner

The 2020 International Nuclear Societies Council (INSC) global award has been won by Shunsuke Kondo, Professor Emeritus of the University of Tokyo, for his achievements and contributions to nuclear technology and the peaceful uses of nuclear energy, a statement by the council said.

The INSC said the award committee also noted Prof. Kondo for his work as an advocate of current and future nuclear technology.

The award will be formally handed to Prof. Kondo on 23 September 2020 at an INSC meeting in Vienna on the sidelines of the International Atomic Energy Agency’s general conference.

The biennial INSC global award is given to nuclear professionals who have contributed to the development of nuclear innovation and technology and the expansion of peaceful uses of nuclear energy internationally.

Prof. Kondo was nominated for the award by the Atomic Energy Society of Japan.

Since 2014 he has presided over the Nuclear Waste Management Organisation of Japan after a decade chairing the Japan Atomic Energy Commission.

The INSC, a global forum for nuclear societies, was set up in 1990 and has a membership of more than 100,000 nuclear science and engineering professionals in 38 national and regional nuclear societies.
