20 Sep (NucNet): The 2018 International Nuclear Societies Council (INSC) global award has been won by Juan Eibenschutz, director-general of Mexico’s National Commission for Nuclear Safety and Safeguards, the European Nuclear Society (ENS) said.
The biennial award is given to nuclear professionals who have contributed to the development of nuclear innovation and technology and the expansion of peaceful uses of nuclear energy internationally.
According to ENS, Mr Eibenschutz won the award because of his contributions to planning and implementing the Mexican nuclear power programme, improving operational safety, and ensuring the functioning of non-proliferation safeguards in Mexico.
He has also been involved in the establishment of nuclear cooperation programmes and initiatives among Latin American countries, the ENS said.
The INSC was set up in 1990 and has a membership of about 80,000 nuclear science and engineering professionals in 38 national and regional nuclear societies around the world.
The last INSC global award went to Dame Sue Ion from the UK in 2016.
