Installation has been completed of the reactor internals for the China-supplied HPR1000 Kanupp-3 nuclear power plant under construction in southern Pakistan, China National Nuclear Corporation said.
The company said installation was completed on 4 April and means workers can now begin preparing for flushing of the unit’s primary circuit and the start of cold tests.
Reactor internals are the major structures within a reactor pressure vessel. The primary function of the internals is to support the core, the control rod assemblies, the core support structure, and the reactor pressure vessel surveillance capsules.

There are two plants under construction at the Kanupp site, also known as Karachi. They are the first of China’s indigenous Generation III HPR1000, or Hualong One, reactor design to be built overseas.
At Kanupp-2, reactor internals were installed in January 2019 and cold functional testing was completed in December 2019.
The units are scheduled for commercial operation in 2021 and 2022.
