Spain’s nuclear fleet can help meet objectives laid out in a national energy and climate plan for 2021-2030, but the government needs to revise “the excessive tax load” the sector is subject to, Madrid-based industry group Foro Nuclear said in a report on the nuclear industry.

The report said nuclear contributes to the stability of the grid and security of supply. In 2019 Spain’s nuclear power plants provided the highest share of the country’s electricity production, with the seven operating nuclear reactors generating 55.8 TWh, or 21.41% of total net production.

Nuclear power plants achieved operation and availability factors above 90% and nuclear was the technology that contributed the most to mitigate climate change, Foro Nuclear said. “Specifically, in 2019, nuclear electric production amounted to 36.1% of the emissions-free electricity generated in Spain.”
