Industry Calls On Brussels To ‘Consider Conclusions’ Of Electricity Cost Report
Commercial nuclear reactors are one of the most affordable low-carbon generation options, a report has said.
The Brussels-based industry group Foratom has called on the European Commission to consider the conclusions of a major new report that showed nuclear power will remain the dispatchable low-carbon technology with the lowest expected levelised costs of energy (LCOE) in 2025.

Foratom, which represents around 3,000 European companies in 15 countries, said the Commission must consider the report when it is drawing up its decarbonisation policies. “This is the only way in which the EU is going to achieve its climate goals at an affordable cost,” said Foratom director-general Yves Desbazeille.

According to the joint Nuclear Energy Agency and International Energy Agency report, nuclear remains the dispatchable low-carbon technology with the lowest expected costs in 2025. Furthermore, the report shows a decline in costs for new nuclear power plants because of lessons learnt from recent first-of-a-kind new build projects.
