The Illinois House of Representatives passed an energy bill on Thursday that could prevent power company Exelon from permanently shutting down four commercial nuclear reactors at two sites, starting with the Byron nuclear station on Monday.

The bill, passed by 83-33 votes, includes $694m in ratepayer subsidies in exchange for a commitment that Exelon would keep its Byron, Dresden and Braidwood nuclear stations operating.

The deal passed the House late on Thursday and goes back to the Senate next. The Senate originally passed the bill earlier this month, but must reconsider it because changes have been made.
