An IAEA Operational Safety Review Team (OSART) concluded a five-day follow-up mission to the two-unit Loviisa on 14 February.
The IAEA team evaluated the plant’s progress in addressing the findings of an IAEA review done in 2018.
The team said that several recommendations from the last review have been fully addressed, including reduction of work errors; better reviews and updates of the severe accident management programme; and improvements in emergency preparedness and practical training for staff in this area.
However, the IAEA said some additional efforts are still required. Plant staff should: further improve the evaluation and analysis of staff performance while implementing activities onsite; continue improving the control and storage of lifting equipment and maintenance tools, and maintenance work practices.
Follow-up missions are standard components of the OSART programme and are usually held within two years of the first review.
The Loviisa nuclear station has two 503-MW pressurised water reactors’ units, operated by Fortum Power and Heat OY. Unit 1 began commercial operation in May 1977 and Unit 2 in January 1981.
