Bulgaria has a comprehensive and robust regulatory framework for nuclear and radiation safety, but the country’s regulatory system would be improved with the adoption of a national safety policy and strategy in line with International Atomic Energy Agency safety standards, the IAEA has said.

An Integrated Regulatory Review Service (IRRS) mission, designed to strengthen the effectiveness of legal and regulatory infrastructure, said Bulgaria has a comprehensive and mature regulatory infrastructure for nuclear and radiation safety, but the challenge for the Bulgarian Nuclear Regulatory Agency (BNRA) will be to prepare itself for the regulatory oversight of the expected expansion of Bulgaria’s nuclear power programme.
