Holtec International has confirmed it is cancelling plans to build a consolidated interim storage facility (CISF) for spent nuclear fuel in southeastern New Mexico.
The Hi-Store CISF facility would have stored up to 10,000 canisters of commercial spent nuclear fuel on land owned by the Eddy-Lea Energy Alliance near the towns of Carlsbad and Hobbs in the US state.
“After discussions with our longtime partner in the Hi-Store project, the Eddy-Lea Energy Alliance [ELEA], and due to the untenable path forward for used fuel storage in New Mexico, we mutually agreed upon canceling the agreement,” Florida-based Holtec said in a statement.
