The head of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has welcomed moves by the World Bank towards lifting its “unjustified” ban on funding nuclear power.

In a post on social media platform LinkedIn Rafael Grossi noted that the bank had signalled progress toward lifting its ban on funding nuclear power.

He said that for way too long, nuclear energy has been left out of international financing mechanisms, limiting access to a reliable, accessible, low-carbon energy source for many countries – especially in the global south.

“At a time when the world needs all clean energy solutions on the table, this is a timely shift,” Grossi said.
