The governor of Miyagi Prefecture has given approval for Tohoku Electric Power Company to restart Unit 2 of its Onagawa nuclear power station in northeastern Japan.

The utility said it aims to restart the 796-MW boiling water reactor in fiscal 2022 at the earliest.

The three-unit station was hit by the March 2011 earthquake and tsunami that resulted in meltdowns at Fukushima-Daiichi to the south, but survived with its cooling system intact, saving its reactors from the threat of meltdowns.
