Japan’s move to embrace a climate target of carbon neutrality by 2050 could open the way for a revival of the commercial nuclear industry, although the government is not yet considering building new reactors, Reuters reported.

Prime minister Yoshihide Suga unveiled a major shift in Japan's position on climate change, announcing the plan for net-zero emissions in his first address to parliament since becoming leader last month.

Mr Suga specifically flagged the greater use of renewable energy and nuclear power. Reports in Japan said energy experts are discussing revisions to Japan’s basic energy plan for 2030 and 2050. The 2050 emissions-free target would require drastic changes and probably prompt calls for more nuclear plant restarts.
