The Bulgarian government has started the initial tender process to build a new Westinghouse AP1000 plant at the Kozloduy nuclear station by issuing a call for expressions of interest from companies wishing to participate in the construction process, Bulgarian state-owned company Kozloduy NPP-New Build said in a document issued on 22 January.
The 2035 deadline for the new unit, Kozloduy-7, represents a slight backsliding on a previous government target for completion of the first new unit at Kozloduy in 2033.
The early 2030s timeline coincides with the country’s coal phaseout. Bulgaria and Poland are currently looking at mid-2030s completion dates for the first AP1000 reactor in Europe.
“The overall objective and result of the current assignment is to have an AP1000 plant procured, constructed, commissioned and operational before 2035,” the tender document states.
