Germany has launched a fusion milestone programme with federal funding of up to €2.5bn (€2.2bn) as it takes another step to spur private investment in the sector by helping companies towards commercialisation.
The programme will start with funding of €500m until 2029 under the Federal Agency for Breakthrough Innovation (Sprind) on behalf of the Ministry of Research, Technology and Space, with total public spending expected to rise to €2.5bn as companies meet certain technical and financial milestones.
The intention is to garner further private investment as companies work towards producing a commercial scale fusion demonstration plant.
