AtkinsRéalis is aiming to deploy its first new large-scale Monark nuclear power reactor in Canada by about 2034-2035 and is already ramping up human capacity and eyeing markets as far afield as South America, Asia and Australia.
Gary Rose, AtkinsRéalis’ executive vice-president of nuclear in Canada, told NucNet Candu Energy will be ready to build 1,000 MW Monark plants, plans for which were announced in November, on “any site that the large utilities in Canada would welcome us on”.
Rose said “this is a nuclear renaissance” and there is a need for nuclear that will be two to three times more than has been installed before. He said around 600 nuclear plants were built during the initial nuclear rollout and that could be as high as 1,300 in the next round of construction.
