The Kanupp-2 nuclear power plant in southern Pakistan has begun commercial operation, becoming the first HPR1000, or Hualong One unit to be put into service outside China.

China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC) said the 1,014-MW pressurised water reactor unit, also known as Karachi-2, began commercial operation on 20 May. Construction began in August 2015 and the plant was connected to the grid on 18 March 2021.

Kanupp-2 is the sixth commercial nuclear power reactor in Pakistan. There are four units at the Chasnupp (also known as Chasma) station in northern Pakistan and another unit, Kanupp-1, at the Kanupp site.
