The final segments of the cryostat for the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (Iter) are ready for shipment, eight years after a contract was signed for the manufacture of the key component by Iter’s Indian domestic agency and Mumbai-based Larsen & Toubro (L&T).

Twelve segments of the top lid plus one central disk – weighing 650 tonnes in all – will leave India to be assembled and welded onsite in France in a dedicated workshop.

They are the final 12 modules of 54 that are being shipped from India to the site of the €20bn Iter project in Cadarache, southern France.
