Lithuania’s environmental protection agency has approved the dismantling and decontamination of the two shut-down nuclear power reactors at the country’s Ignalina nuclear station.

INPP, the company operating the station, said the approval was for the reactors and the reactor internals including graphite moderator, boiling tubes, nuclear fuel and reactor auxiliary systems. Decommissioning of other areas of the facility, including the turbine hall, began in 2010.

Dismantling of the reactors is scheduled to be completed in 2035, followed by removal of systems and equipment used during the reactor dismantling process.
