Belarus has made significant progress implementing a national action plan for its first nuclear power station, although several areas still require attention including qualification of the fire extinguishing system and fire brigade building, and extending the seismic monitoring network.

In a final report on its peer review of the plan, the European Nuclear Safety Regulators Group said out of the 22 recommendations in a 2018 Ensreg report, 17 have been fully implemented. Actions relating to five recommendations are being taken and “correspond to the essence of the recommendations”, Ensreg, an independent safety advisory group, said.

Ensreg said that with regard to natural hazards, particular attention has been paid to the seismic safety at the site, which has two nuclear plants supplied by Russia, one of which has begun commercial operation. Although the site is in an area with low seismic activity, there are few historical seismic records in the region.
