Shearwater Energy, a UK-based energy company, has announced plans to develop a hybrid wind, small modular reactor and hydrogen production hybrid energy project at Wylfa in North Wales.

When fully developed the project would provide 3 GW of zero-carbon energy and over 3 million kg/y of green hydrogen for use by the UK’s transport sector.

Shearwater said it could build the hybrid plant for “less than £8bn” and start generating carbon-neutral power by late 2027. The company, which also has offices in Singapore and the Philippines, said a site has been earmarked at Wylfa on Anglesey, separate to the site for the proposed Wylfa Newydd nuclear power station.

Hitachi announced last year that it was scrapping plans to build two UK Advanced Boiling Water Reactors at the Wylfa nuclear site, blaming the lack of a viable financing structure in an “increasingly severe” post-Covid investment environment.
