Ukraine’s state-owned nuclear operator Energoatom expects to be ready to start equipment installation for Unit 3 at the Khmelnitski nuclear power station in the west of the country as early as June 2024, according to a statement.

Ukraine wants to deploy four new reactors at Khmelnitski, which already shas two commercial Soviet Era VVER-1000 pressurised water reactor units.

Kyiv plans to complete Khmelnitski-3 and -4. Both were to be VVER-1000 units, but work on them was abandoned after Ukraine’s independence from the Soviet Union. The country is also looking to build two AP1000 pressurised water reactor units, Khmelnitski-5 and -6, with the help of US-based Westinghouse Electric.
