Changes proposed by French nuclear power company EDF could result in a new environmental enquiry for the Hinkley Point C nuclear power station in Somerset, southwest England.
EDF Energy, EDF’s UK division, secured planning consent for two EPR units at the site in 2013 and construction began three years later.
The planning permission required EDF to invest in a number of measures to offset the environmental impact of the new facility.
The company is now seeking to make a number of changes to the agreed measures – particularly the creation of 800 acres (320 hectares) of saltmarshes to replace a planned acoustic fish deterrent system, according to the BBC’s Local Democracy Reporting Service.
