The US Department of Energy (DOE) has opened applications for up to $900m in funding to support the initial domestic deployment of Generation III+ small modular reactor (SMR) technologies.
The DOE said it plans to use this funding – made possible in part by president Joe Biden’s Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, signed in 2021 – to spur the deployment of advanced reactor technologies across the country and encourage follow-on reactor projects to support our nation's ambitious climate goals and meeting growing energy demand.
It said the funding aims to help the private sector in establishing a credible and sustainable pathway to deploying a fleet of Generation III+ SMRs across the country.
