The Czech Republic will sign a contract on 7 May with South Korea’s Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (KHNP) for the construction of two new nuclear power plants at the Dukovany nuclear power station site, prime minister Petr Fiala has said.

Fiala made his comments as the Czech government announced plans to acquire an 80% stake in Elektrarna Dukovany II (EDU II), a subsidiary of the state-owned energy company ČEZ, which is overseeing the project.

The 80% stake in EDU II is valued at $164m (€144m). ČEZ will continue holding a 20% interest in EDU II.
