The Philippines is making progress in developing the nuclear infrastructure it needs as it embarks on the development of the country’s nuclear power programme, according to an International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) review mission.

The mission team indicated, however, that further work is needed to finalise the Southeast Asia nation’s nuclear power strategy and to complete necessary studies for activities related to the electrical grid, industrial involvement and national legislation.

The team noted that the Philippines has drafted and advanced a comprehensive nuclear law towards enactment. Manila has completed assessments in human resource development, regulatory framework, radiation protection, radioactive waste management and emergency preparedness and response, and has also drafted policies and strategies where needed.
