Two CAP1000 units under construction at Shandong province site
Hot testing has been completed at Unit 3 of the Haiyang nuclear power station in Shandong province, eastern China, State Power Investment Corporation announced.
Hot testing is performed to verify the operation of reactor components and systems together and confirm the reactor is ready for the loading of fuel.
Haiyang-3 is one of two 1,161-MW CAP1000 pressurised water reactor units under construction at Haiyang.
The CAP1000 is China’s Generation III indigenous version of US-based Westinghouse’s AP1000 design.
According to the International Atomic Energy Agency, China has 60 nuclear units in commercial operation and 37 – significantly more than any other country – under construction.
China’s official energy framework targets roughly 110 GW of installed nuclear power capacity by 2030, outlined under its 15th Five-Year Plan.
This massive buildout aims to supply stable baseload clean energy, reduce fossil fuel reliance, and support the nation’s broader target of carbon neutrality by 2060.
