California’s governor Gavin Newsom has signed into state law two bills that could overturn a 50-year-old ban on developing new nuclear to meet climate and energy goals, as well as establishing a fusion energy strategy.
One of the bills signed by Newsom, a Democrat, directs the state to conduct a formal assessment of whether new nuclear plants and advanced nuclear technologies could help meet California's clean-energy goals and support critical infrastructure
That assessment is due by 1 January 2027 and would cover a cost assessment, reliability, workforce benefits, environmental impact and fuel cycle.
