The US Department of Defense has contracted Virginia-based BWX Technologies (BWXT) to deliver the country’s first advanced mobile microreactor prototype for testing at the Idaho National Laboratory (INL).

BWXT said the award was made by the DOD strategic capabilities office and the prototype, known as Project Pele, is scheduled to be completed and delivered in 2024.

According to a statement, the prototype will be built under a cost contract evaluated at approximately $300m (€282m) at BWXT’s manufacturing facilities in Lynchburg, Virginia and Euclid, Ohio.
